They are all the same, what differentiates them is features.
I've been running my Linksys First Ed Wireless router since I got umpteen million years ago, it works fine. I have all the fireware updates even though they stoppped updating it back in Feb 03.
Anyways, Netgear and Linksys make fine products for what you need, just don't get starstruck by the features. Chem hit it, you should be able to get setup around that $50 mark.
IF you're paranoid about security you shouldn't be using wireless period. I have different provisions in place when I do turn on my laptop to use the wireless to protect myself above the useless sub 3 minute crackable WEP.
Just get the basic setup, turn on the security features, WEP/WPA1/2/MAC(lol)
