"Red Eye" Review

From the start of the film to about 75 minutes in, you'll most likely say to yourself, "This doesn't feel like a Wes Craven film at all." It starts out with a light mood that feels very un-Craven like. The characters are introduced very well, showing their brighter sides with a distinct mark to make you like them. Rachel McAdams and Cillian Murphy both shine in their respected roles. Murphy plays both charmer and convincer with a very well executed creepy side and McAdams knows how to pull off strong, deviant and terrified. On board, it becomes a real nail biter with some actual smart moves and well crafted and placed characters. The concept of what is going on may seem a bit out of there, but it works well and Craven puts it to good use. Once off the plane, Craven goes back to his typical run of the mill horror chases, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. It churns up some good tension with some great hits, but Murphy turns into those cliche bad guys who seems to lose all sense of motion as he trips over what not. What I enjoyed more about this though is how Craven doesn't hold any punches and actually has the victim pull some strings that you wouldn't normally see happen in a typical slasher film. Most people have said that the 85 minute run time was perfect and that if it was any longer, it would have been ruined. I beg to differ. I wanted more plane time with its dark tension that was built up very nicely until the final scene.
