you'll need it to play on patched servers. and you'll need to reinstall the patch after you install SF too.

ALSO. When I installed SF it overwrote my config files (controls/video/audio/etc.). All but the Profiles.con file.

So....
backup to profiles folders,
install SF,
copy your profile folder back to \my documents\battlefield 2 folder.
