we had a motor (not engine) run without oil for 2 years at work. no one checked to see if it had oil in it when they installed it.
sounds like a well designed engine, try it with a car, lol. running without oil and running with crappy oil i would think are completely different until the crappy oil just gets so sludgy it causes too much friction
