I bought my Cable Modem from my cable company and the only reason I bought it was they wanted $4 a month for rental. If it was only a $1 a month I would have rented it. Mine has been running for 2 years with no problems, it is a Toshiba. I would suggest if you do go to buy you own, to call the service provider and ask which ones are compatable with your cable system. Mine said they would give me a list if I wanted to buy my own.

depending on who you have you may wanna call and see if they have differnt plans now. I did and now there is no fee to rent the modem
. of course now I got the 5mbps up and 512kbps down speeds
