i'm an apprentice machinist and work for a company (RF Ironworks) which is owned by a huge offshore company (Hydril).
We are a tiny specialized shop that (mainly) threads pipe that's use to draw mud and oil from the holes on oil rigs.
I spend my days working on a dinosaur of a CNC lathe threading pipe/connections. It's a massive, dirty, dual turret machining center that runs suprisingly well considering it's age (very little backlash and way wear). I do my best to avoid crashes, but i once rapided the rear turret into the work :S.
I like my job and the people i work with. Today, I just got back from an oil field technology picknick (put on by a lot of the big names in the oil industry around here, and coors light). Free beer (coors light) and rum and jello shooters and sausages and hamburgers and pop and nachos and a whole bunch of awesome stuff. Twas an excellent time.
