I bought the Orange Box at Wal-Mart for $50 mainly because I didn't want to download it (I have a relatively slow DSL connection). The Orange Box has two DVDs and that includes HL2, EP1, EP1, Portal, and TF2. I'm going to say TF2 is around 2.5GB (rough estimate) in size. Steam has always maxed out my conection however, though not sure how busy it is (I'm sure its died down a little) right now on their servers.
Just to throw in my opinion about gameplay:
I really like TF2 because each class lets me play the game differently and still have a highly active role. Even the defensive positions really give you a sense to putting a lot forward to the team. This is because of how the capture and defend mechanic works and the great importance of choke points in TF2. The game really focuses around high and low points of each team and capitalizing on those.
My personal favorite classes at this point are the Solider and Spy. The Solider lets me get into combat and focus on taking out engineers sentries and suppression of the opposing force. Where as the Spy allows me to work my way behind enemy lines and take out their key players, such as a medic who might get a Ubercharge (temporary invulnerability for him and his current healing target) off soon.
