projection tv's are actually one of the easiest things to fix. The reason is that they are one of the few new electronic devices out there that still try to be analog.

The good news is it's likely one $5.00 chip that is bad, and that chip would probably be obvious (I.E. you don't need any equipment to test for the problem) if you had a service manual. The bad news is that you bought a sony, which means it's probably some crappy chip made in taiwon that is a special order/rare item for every USA store/website in existance...

What I would do is check online for pin compatible chips with the one that's bad. then replace it with one that doesn't suck, like TI or philips. Most cheap parts are knock offs of good ones after all.
