hard drive troubles

so okay...i realize after my format, and in game that my hard drive is indeed dying. im not sure exactly when its going to go, but it is definitely on its way out...and right now its gunna prevent me from gaming until i replace it.

comp will actually freeze...then you can hear it click, and itll kick back doing whatever it was doing.

im not surprised its going...but it sure does come at a terrible time.

ive been looking at the WD Raptor 74gb 10,000rpm SATA drive. does anyone have any other suggestions on what i should/could get and maybe where to pick one up? definitely wanting to replace it real soon.

and btw, laura...thats why i was freezing in-game yesterday evening and finally got frustrated and left. =\

Do you have SATA on your motherboard?

Also, I highly suggest you get a Maxtor Diamond Max 10 rather than the WD Raptor, the Diamond Max 10s are faster in every day use than the Raptor's. That's if you want to go SATA anyway. Plus the Diamond Max 10 goes up in way larger sizes, all the way up to about 300GBs for the same price as the 74GB Raptor.

The Diamond Max 10 has a 16MB buffer, and NCQ support. Those two things really help launch it above the Raptor in every day use. About the only think the Raptor wins anymore is level loading for games, and then its only by like a second or two.

The Maxtor is much faster, but that WD has another 50GBs of space for only a dollar more. Up to you, I'd personally get the Maxtor.

yep...im on an ASUS P4P800 Deluxe board. SATA and Raid support are both onboard.

ill check it out. i was basically looking for a 2 drive setup. 1 internal semi-large drive to run my OS, programs, and applications....and 1 external huge drive used for storage purposes....songs, emulators, pictures, videos, downloads...etc etc.

but for right now i just need to get that internal drive...and i'd at least like it to be something fairly decent. i shall check that out.

Buy one of each and enjoy having 550GB of HD space!
