i've had nothing but bad luck with wireless routers
i don't care if the cables are messy, i prefer them over wireless any day
also, wireless is less secure (if that worries you)
be sure to enable mac address control if it does

i used to hate wireless, as small said i had trouble getting it all to work right at my friends house, but that was a couple years ago when wireless was newer. if you stay with a known name, someone like linksys or netgear are good. my dad wanted to run wireless in the house since he got a laptop for work so i got a netgear wireless G router and have had no problems using it. as small said though, they do pose security risks, people can steal your internet easily if they're in range and probably do some networking **** to get into your comps if they're so inclined.
as for good online sites, i have no idea. i bought all the stuff for us at best buy. i dont know if they have ads like they do here, but every sunday we get ads in the paper with all sorts of mail in rebates and stuff...saved like 50-100 bucks in mail in rebates. i'd try newegg.com or buy.com i guess, i've bought from them before and they have decent prices.

For things like that I just go to a local store and pick it up. Only place I can find better do those through rebates, and I dont like waiting for rebates. I bought all my wireless stuff at Walmart actually, got an amazingly good deal too. Linksys router and USB adapater for only like $50 total.

They are all the same, what differentiates them is features.
I've been running my Linksys First Ed Wireless router since I got umpteen million years ago, it works fine. I have all the fireware updates even though they stoppped updating it back in Feb 03.
Anyways, Netgear and Linksys make fine products for what you need, just don't get starstruck by the features. Chem hit it, you should be able to get setup around that $50 mark.
IF you're paranoid about security you shouldn't be using wireless period. I have different provisions in place when I do turn on my laptop to use the wireless to protect myself above the useless sub 3 minute crackable WEP.
Just get the basic setup, turn on the security features, WEP/WPA1/2/MAC(lol)

Every network card has a mac address hardcoded, it's a hardware identifier. If you are serving DHCP, then anything that *can* connect to your network will receive an IP.
Changing your mac address to match one that you discovered ooff your packet capture...

mac address control can block unspecified mac addresses from connecting to your router
there should be an option to do that

Wow, Staples has a sale today, and they are selling the Linksys Wireless-B router for only $9.94 after INSTANT savings, and a Linksys Wireless-B PCMCIA Card for $4.94. I got both! Never know when you might need a spare. I saved $95.00 upfront.
I was at the store 1 hour before they opened. First one in the door, and the line behind me was around the corner when they opened. They only had 16 of each. Lucky I got there first.
