Well, I managed to get it going.
Although I have the game and was going to bring it over
for him, I just grabbed a copy online and I guess it somehow
had the gore disabled (no lock to click on, and nothing in the
Scalability menu).
I managed to re-enable it by adding a command to the game
shortcut ("+set lock_blood 0) and then bringing up the console
and typing in "menu lock".
Yay dismemberment !
