I'd say the same about C++ really. Assembler truly is only about weeding people out, hence why both Comp Sci programs I've been in have avoided it. Instead they both threw introductory courses with significant C++ challenges in them at the students to find out whom could succeed on larger, more involved work. And really, C++ gives you the majority of the functionality you'd ever need (honestly, if you need the power of Assembler, you've got a damn good reason why and you damn well already know what you are doing anyway).

I can still remember second semester, Frosh year, Intro 2 programming. We basically recoded STL stuff the whole time; it was eff-ing delightful.

(Note: This doesn't imply C++ is the language of choice in any situation. Hell no. Just saying, having a good grasp of the language and what you can do with it will put you in a good position to pick up any language. Hell, once you learn 2-3 languages and understand syntax and symantics, you can learn any language [even the crappy, archaic ones that are only used by the 5 people that still obsess over them.])

Dagger, you're paying an awful lot of dues. It's nice to see you setting yourself up for a positive future.

i'm pretty sure my favorite class in high school was study hall. i studied very hard in that class...

...and when i say i studied, i purely mean my face studied the desk very closely while it was pressed against it drooling heavily in blissful sleep. =P

I watched the space shuttle launch explosion in study hall.

The most important thing I learned in study hall was that the study hall teachers didn't notice absenties, so I'd spend my study hall periods wandering the halls (I kept a wooden door stop covered in writing as a "hall pass", and I had -- through pure genius -- both the elevator key and the master classroom key). The last two years of high school were sweet.
