Picked up a new vid card today...

So I picked up a Evga 8800 GTS 512mb card earlier today.

They are going for 369.99 but match the 8800 GTX and Ultra speeds in most benchmarks that are under 1900x1200 and are not using max AA settings. That is not too shabby considering it is around half the cost of the 8800 Ultra cards and easily 100+ dollars less than a 8800 GTX.

I also was able to easily crank the speeds of the card from the factory ones to match Asus's over clocked version at 740mhz core, 1800mhz shader, and 2070mhz memory speeds keeping the temps down under 65C under full load using the ATITool stress test.

So far I am pretty happy with the card. I have not really got to test it out in a ton of games on the new memory settings but I hope to later on this week.

I upgraded from a 7800GT 256mb card so it was about time for me.

If anyone is thinking of getting a new video card this is definitely a good one to consider. Plus Evga has a 90day step up program where you can change cards and pay the difference. This is a very attractive program considering there are rumors that Nvidia will be releasing their next chip set design the 2nd week of February 2008.

School is also out so I hope to see all of you more often until my break is up in January.

It is not so bad since I had the card for about 2 years. The 7800 series was released in the fall / winter months of 2005.

It is amazing being able to play and enjoy to the fullest with the eye candy on in games like Crysis, The Witcher, Bioshock, Neverwinter Nights 2, and some older games. It is a totally new level of immersion into the game world. I have never been able to easily run a game at 1600x1200 with max graphics (Crysis is still a no go on any video card for max graphics) and have no problems with stuttering or frames dipping below 30-40 FPS on the minimum.

I was having problems with all of the "next gen" games and this was a huge bang for the buck versus their previous 8800 pricing. I would have got a 8800GT since they run 250-299 and have almost the exact same speeds but the kicker is no dual slot cooler. They run a heck of a lot hotter from a less efficient heat sink fan plus it dumps all that heat inside your case rather than out the back. I felt that it was worth 50-80 dollars more to be able to over clock it faster, not heat my other PC components up, and overall have a cooler running video card. Since I would have probably just dumped almost that much money on an after market cooler to fix the GT's problems there was no real price difference to me.
