Noob Question

I got my daughter a small 5gal aquarium and two goldfish. She picked out the two fish and one of them happens to be much larger than the other. It looks like the larger one has been taking bites out of the tail of the little one. Is that something goldfish do and if so..what can you do to prevent it? Do I need to be feeding them more? Do I need two goldfish of similar size? Help!

try putting more hiding places in the tank. the bigger one is being territorial eating the fins of the other till it dies.

the food chain works.

Blong is right on the hiding places, but in a 5 gallon tank thats very difficult. Likewise, the "recomended" stocking level for goldfish is 1 fish for every 10 gallons of water, due to the amount of waste they put out. Is that a hard and fast rule? No, but it is a good idea.
