Sturgeon

I got this in an email.

This Sturgeon was caught at TWO CREEKS CONSERVATION AREA, Wheatley, ON (at Lake Erie) 11/19/2007

It weighed out at over 1,000 lbs and measured out at 11'1'. It was 56' around the girth and took over 6 and a half hours, and 4 dozen beers, for the 4 guys taking turns at the reeling it in.

Any Sturgeon OVER five feet has to be released unharmed and cannot be removed from the water. They are brood/breeding stock and probably older than most of us.

Pretty amazing to think those fish are in our waters.
I'm tempted to think the stats may be exxagerated,
but it's still amazing.

I've seen the pic before, it's actually from the Fraser River in BC. (The Lake Sturgeon found in all the great lakes only grows to about 200 pounds max) I forget if it's a White Sturgeon or what the species is but they do get even bigger. It's hard to measure an exact weight because (at least in the US) it's illegal to fully remove them from the water. You can get pretty accurate by measuring length and girth and using a formula. There are reports (and some compelling pictures) of fish going up to 1500 pounds but the official world record is much lower since old reports are generally unreliable, the fish was protected until recently and with the no-removal rule it's impossible to weight them!
