Thanks all..wish I'd had a little more depth of field and been able to get his tongue (probascis?) in focus along with his antenna....

focus is tricky with macro because your in so close. remember: focus tells the camera how far you're from the subject. so in something that close, something just a hair farther away could get out of focus, especially if its small like those antennae

if your quick, just note what your speed and aperature was at, knowing it will probably do this and bump the settings up. You go in for your shot in p mode and notice it says speed 1/30 sec and f3 switch to manual real quick and shoot at 1/15 and f4.5. Of course mr. butterfly probably flew away by then.

not to mention the smaller shutter speed the harder it is too keep still... and i doubt varm was using a tripod there lol

Varm I don't know what I find more interesting - the pose of the butterfly or the color and design on that flower!! Very nice pic!

Your right mittens... this was handheld and on the spur of the moment. I was actually holding down the stem of the flower with my left hand and shooting one handed ..in aperature priority mode. I probably had enough light to go to a narrower fstop (more dof) but I didn't have a 3rd hand
