i didnt post this before, but in the first two it looks like the street lamps are like tesla coils and shooting lighting from them (i know, real tesla coils don't do that, but i'm talking red alert and c&c here). that makes them that much cooler

Really awesome pics Varm! My favourite is of the two teenagers Also the black and white one of a fellow photographer gives off a kind of ghostly feel because he's so blurred and that's pretty cool!

I tried (for the second time) to get some pictures of lightning the other night. I didn't have a tripod though so I think that was 99% of my problem. What kind of settings do you need to have the camera on to capture it? I tried long exposures, but then everything just ended up kinda light in the area where the lightning was. And then short ones you just have to be lucky with, am I wrong?

I actually DID get a pic of lightning once but it was off to the side and behind a tree... but you could see the bolt through the leaves! lol

lol... My opinion is the opposite of that! I love the actual lightning in the first two pictures but the bursting street lights turn me off from the pics. They pull my eyes away from the lightning and the rest of the scene when they don't want to move. But I understand it was something that couldn't be avoided.

The color of everything varm, the harshness of the other lights. Its a negative effect of having your shutter open for so long, it allowed you to capture the lightning, but it also caused everything to come out really weird to me. The street lights really draw a lot of attention away from the lightning.

I like the path shot. I'm not sure why you had to use such a long exposure though. Depending on what mood you were going for, couldnt you have used a shorter one and made it darker?

I really like the one of your friend and the couple. The colors in the water in the one of the couple is beautiful, and it worked very very well.

I was going for the surreal look of long exposures at nights..the lights..nothing you can do about them.. thats just the way it works on long exposures. I could have taken a shorter/darker exposure on the path..but it wouldn't give that eerie surreal look that comes from night low light ambience. I wasn't try to capture it like daytime..but I didn't want it to look like night either. I pretty much captured what I was going for artistically...but everyone doesn't have to like the same thing..that is why its art

Hey Varmit, I was just at books-a-million and picked up the september/october edition of PHOTO Techniques magazine and saw an article in there on taking pictures of lightning. Most of it is based on film but there is a small blurb on digital. Might be a good read for ya.
