A few quick flower macros.

I found a greenhouse on campus, and I took a few quick photos. Not works of art by any means, but interesting nonetheless.

After seeing your ballpoint pen shot, I was really expecting an even closer shot, maybe of a very small, like the size of dust, insect filling the screen like the one at http://www.pbase.com/liquidstone/image/36788546 ,but even closer than that.

The third one is nifty because of the magnification of the yellow things. I felt the other three would be more likeable by myself if all the ends were in focus. They are so close to the one in focus, yet are out of focus, slightly, that is became more of a distraction to me.

Just my opinion.. I like nearly all of your other pictures in your other posts though.

Yeah, it's amazingly hard to get the depth of field necessary to get all of the red ball things in focus. With macro you're often playing with only MILLIMETERS of DOF, even with the aperture stopped all the way down (and then the lens isn't as sharp). Getting all the red bulbs in focus would be impossible short of a four shot composite.

But that actually gives me an idea. I think I will go back and do a four shot composite. Should be purty.

it would be nice to see them all in focus... please post if you get the shot right.

how do you do 4 shots without moving the camera even slightly when you change your focal point??

Camera and lens are on a tripod, and just manually turn the focus ring to focus on each of the four red thingies. The compositing is the thing that I have to figure out. With macro lenses, the simple act of focusing increases/decreases magnification, resulting in slightly different sized pictures.

I'm gonna try figuring out this compositing software tomorrow.

Good ringlights are expensive , plus I've heard that they give a very flat uninteresting light. What I would like to do eventually is get a speedlight ($200, basically an external flash), and build a milk-jug flash diffuser to mount in front of my lens to soften up the light.

The problem with the diffuser is that I keep forgetting to keep the damn empty milk jugs after I finish the milk ><
