My one experience with shooting fireworks was that most of my pics turned out quite well - as Nitro said "I thought these were pretty good for my first time." I also used a tripod...this was years and years ago, when I got my 1st 35mm SLR camera, a Minolta, so I don't remember any settings, but I think I just used the stock 50mm lens. It was film so I don't have digital copies to post.
My point is to encourage any of you to go for it. Nitro's pics are really, really nice (but you already knew that) and after seeing his 1st attempt at photographing fireworks, coupled w/ my own experience, I have to conclude that getting good results is not terribly difficult. I do know that before I took mine I had no clue what I should do to photograph fireworks and figured I'd probably just end up wasting a couple of rolls of film. I was very pleasantly surprised at the results.
