Historic Oakland Cemetary in Atlanta

Here are some pics of my recent group trip to the Historic Oakland Cemetery in downtown Atlanta, GA.

Linked since there are 24 or so photos.

Tanks..the hawk was sitting up there while 3 of us were just snapping away.. I got about 50 shots of him. One of the other guys said he was going to shoo him away so we could get a flying shot so I got ready and waited. When I saw movement I just snapped and held it down and my camera got like 5 shots..this was the best one out of the series.

I checked these out last night (well, this morning...) but I was too tired to reply to your IM lol

Some of these are really really awesome. This one just might be my favourite: http://photos.iburbia.com/displayima...album=6&pos=13. I think it's because the reddish orange color of the beads stands out so much. It obviously isn't part of the statue but it still "fits".

Other ones that I really liked are: http://photos.iburbia.com/displayima...?album=6&pos=4 - the colors in this remind me of autumn...mmmm my favourite season! it's a really nice sort of abstract shot. i think it would be abstract, i don't know.
http://photos.iburbia.com/displayima...?album=6&pos=7 - I love the dominating rusted red color in this one!!
http://photos.iburbia.com/displayima...album=6&pos=19 - I thought at first the bird was part of a statue because it was so clear and there was no blur. I wish my camera could do this
http://photos.iburbia.com/displayima...album=6&pos=21 - same with this one... it's awesome and looks like a papparazi shot (replace his face with tom cruise, lol) but I can never get a crisp clear picture of someone in motion, even in really good lighting

http://photos.iburbia.com/displayima...?album=6&pos=8 - this one I probably would have liked a lot more if you zoomed out just enough to where the entire memorial was in view with no edges cut off.
http://photos.iburbia.com/displayima...?album=6&pos=6 - this is a great perspective shot but the light at the end of the path throws me off a bit. it's probably just burn out though... something i have probably never been able to take a picture without having

really great pics varm!! i'm interested to see what others picked as their favourites

The first one is my favorite, with the statues hand point up into the Fog/clouds.

Thanks Laura.. I would loved to have had the whole memorial but they put an iron fence about 6ft from it alll the way around. I had to open a gate and use a wide angle from about 8 ft away to get this shot.

Thanks for the comments...

I've been waiting for these and it looks like it was worth the wait Varmit. I also like seeing the iso and other settings that you used.

Here are the ones I liked and why:
IMG_6162 (File Number 4) - One reason is the stark difference in color between the chain/lock and the rest of the picture. The other reason is the lines. The lines are almost entrely vertical. Sure there is the one strip of chain going horizontal and a few other things, but looking at first glance it strikes me as all vertical. Did you use a tripod for this shot? I have a feeling , i got this when i enlarged the pic, that you handheld it. Just a feeling.

IMG_6163 (File Number 5) - Simliar to the first reason to File Number 4. Also I like this one a bit better than Number six as it gives me a bit of mystery.

IMG_6168 (File Number 7) - The slanting perspective on this is nice and you did a great job at taking it level but interestingly enough, it's not the main reason I like it. What i noticed is that at the far end of the walkway there is nothing but whiteness, as if, well, you know about the accounts of people that died and were resuciatated and talked about a white light and going towards it? Here we go, cemetary, dead people, white light at the end of the walkway. Is God on the other side? I'm sure it was just over exposed for that part.

IMG_6180 (File Number 10) - The lighting on this was perfect I felt. It's a good stone statue with good lighting. Was this shot in color because fo the green lichen/moss on it?

IMG_6190 (File Number 13) - Word play I guess you can call it. Cementary with a eatery across the street called Six Feet Under. Genius.

IMG_6206 (14) Again it comes to the start contrast between shades of gray and a colored item such as the beads. The blurred background also helped bring this out. Kudos.

IMG_6217color (17) - I like things to be even and symetric I guess. I can't understand why I liked this more than it's b&w counterpart.

IMG_6300color (21) - Great timing! That's why I like it. Great timing. I wish I could get close enough to the small birds around here for something like that. I would like to see the other 4 pics you took during the burst.

IMG_6313 (22) - You can see how much he is into it. I like that you captured it. I would have known this without the caption at the bottom.

All pics were well taken, these were just the ones that I liked best.

#4 wasn't hand held..it was a 1 sec exposure if I just read my exif info right. I may have had some tripod movement...but I think what you probably see is more jpeg leftovers from resizing it for the web.

#5 & #6 Those were some cool old spigots..glad someone else liked em. I especially liked that one as the patterns in the stone behind it were interesting to me. Believe it or not..#5 is just a crop of #6. #6 is just about the same exact crop as I took in-camera but I just straightened it a bit.

#7 I only took 1 shot of this one..and yes..it was exposed for the ground and walkway. It was dark and rainy and about 7:00 am when I took that shot. I took it though just for the reason you said..I thought it would be symbolic of walking the path to God after you die.

#10 Yes.. I kept it in color for the lichen/moss and the background. I took three shots of this statue..two full body and one of just the head area.. I liked this one best so you could see the organic detail and weather of the stone.

#13 Yes..that place's name was hilarious..the food was supposed to be good but we didn't eat there that day.

#14 I liked the beads too and they prompted me to take the shot. The talkative volunteer there said people's descendants will bring things to decorate the markers and stuff still...even though this one was probably pushing close to 100yrs old. I wish I had gotten a little more bokeh (blurring) in the background but as you see from the EXIF info.. I was already at 1/25th of a second and only f6.3...it was in a very dark, shaded area underneath a big tree. I was lucky to get it.

#17 This wasn't quite the shot I wanted but I'm still happy with it. I like the color too because of the patina on the lions.

#21 I got lucky..that's all there is to it. Was just at the right place at the right time. he was about 30ft off the ground directly above and in front of me about 20 ft.. He hangs out there at the cemetery and is very used to people I guess. It took us a few attempts to get him to fly off. I'll share some of the others directly with you via email or something if you'll send your email to me.

#22 He was definitely a character. He says he gives the "un-PC" tour if we wanted to come back sometime. I just might do that

Thanks for the comments.. and I'd be glad to meet up with you for another jaunt around there in better weather some weekend morning if you want!

Oh ya..larger versions are temporarily stored at:

http://www.iburbia.com/david/photogr...klandjuly2005/

but they will be gone in a few days but they really show a lot more detail if you like the shots.

see what I mean?
