TeamFortress 2 Details

TeamFortress 2 Details [March 22, 2007, 9:31 pm ET] - 43 Comments

As noted on the Steam Forums, a new issue of German gaming magazine PC Action has new details about TeamFortress 2 (thanks xXBatmanXx). There is a translation of the significant details on Halflife2.net, where they have details on classes, maps and gameplay, and some general details. Here are the general details:
* There won't be "normal" grenades anymore. Valve thinks that they unify the different classes too much.

* Unlike in Fortress Forever, teleporters are kept in Team Fortress 2. The ammo dispenser will make a comeback as well.

* There will be a personalized statistics system. For example, you could see an in-game message like "Hey, you've never played your class as well as today - keep it up!"

* Valve thinks that classes in other games are a joke. "Where's the difference between me choosing a M16 or an AK-47 rifle?", asks Robin Walker.

* It would be technically feasible to let owners of a PC, XBOX 360 and PS3 play against each other. Whether this feature makes it into the final game is still uncertain and depends on Sony and Microsoft.

* Valve received very few threatening letters because of TF2's comic design.

* Owners of multicore processors will get additional, undisclosed, graphics details.

I knew this would happen... and it excites me, I think the next gen MP gaming will be platform independent.

Unless its a Games for Windows (and therefore Windows Live game) then it most likely will not happen. Unreal Tournament 3 for example will support such options. I believe Halo 2 has this (?). Its part of the "Gold" service for Windows Live. I don't see Valve basically making their own Steam service suddenly useless for near half its features, and I don't see Microsoft letting it happen unless its part of Live... Sony, well Sony's online platform is already screwed, so we'll see.

I can't help but feel the console vs PC will not turn out so well. Frankly a gamer using a pad of some sorts just simply can not hang with those using a mouse. A mouse is just simply much quicker and accurate. FPS games on consoles help the players aim in the first place, PC gamers will not go for this, as its basically cheating. So its either piss off PC gamers or have them slaughter console gamers.

I see where some down sides can be made and some upsides but I'd have to disagree. I mean its true that a mouse is obviously quicker but console gamers can always turn there sensitivity to max which is what I do. Besides there are alot of gamers out there that play for the consoles that can move fast with the controller instead of the mouse. For an example, i think Gears of War would be wicked hard to play on the PC. The way I see it, some games are going to be better for the PC and some games are going to be better for the consoles. But now we have to look at modding or stuff like special game types people make or maps. I used to hang out with a bunch of people who made maps and did codding to make new things. Basicly PC gamers have more an advantage because how the hell are console gamers supposed to do that. But to round it all off, I think this whole thing where console gamers and pc gamers can play one another, I don't think this will come around and work effectivly after 2015 atleast.
