That's not MSN Messenger that is Windows Messenger. But anyway, you have to the control and click on "Add and Remove Programs" then click on the tab that says "Add/Remove Windows Components" a pop up will come up that says "Windows XP Setup" then that will go away and a window will come up that has "Windows Components Wizard" at the top, scroll down and you'll see Windows Messenger. You'll want to unclick that check box then click next, it'll run through the process of disabling it, once its done you'll just need to click finish.

I already looked in the windows component wizard. no windows messanger is available for check or uncheck in that. Thus the reason I am asking =].

You can't its intergrated into the entire operating system. You can disable it on start up and thats about it. Now the messenger only runs when a program is useing it.

Sure you can remove it altogether. Click Start->Run, copy/paste one of the following and hit enter:

rundll32 setupapi,InstallHinfSection BLC.Remove 128 %SystemRoot%\INF\msmsgs.inf

or

RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\inf\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove

DISCLAIMER: I take no responsibility for your computer melting down if you do something wrong.

-----

You can also do it in gpedit.msc with two checkboxes

Google is your friend.

yeah, thats one of the first things i do after reformatting..:

open up c:\windows\inf\sysoc.inf

find the line: msmsgs=msgrocm.dll,OcEntry,msmsgs.inf,hide,7

and make it:
msmsgs=msgrocm.dll,OcEntry,msmsgs.inf,,7

save it and goto add/remove, then windows components, and it should be there

thats how i do it, never done it rid's way, although it's all the same

I had not taken the time to look into how to remove Messenger if it was not shown in the Windows Components section, but I now have a machine with that issue at work. Thanks for those two posts of work-arounds guys.

If you don't want it to load...open task mgr (ctrl-alt-del) make sure msmsgs.exe is not running, or close it. then open windows explorer and rename messenger file to messengerOFF

The best way is to not even load it with the OS to begin with..

For those that like a nice clean install with all the latestest hotfixes, service packs and want to remove a ton of the MS bloatware it is quite simple using the 2 program listed below.

My last clean install took about 15 mins.

I use these 2 tools :
http://nuhi.msfn.org/index.html
nLite (main program, let's you remove all kinds of stuff services, programs etc. as well as add programs and and drivers, SP's and hotfixes.)

http://ryanvm.net/msfn/
This guy keeps an updated cab file of the most recent MS hotfixes as well as some other programs you can add to your install like adobe, and java.

i sort-of kluged-uninstalled windows messenger, but everytime our babysitter uses her hotmail account, the icon shows up in the sys-tray again even though I removed/renamed the file that actually allows it to run. Next time I install I might try riddlers fix or soul's link.

If you dont uninstall it do this:

Start->Run

type in: gpedit.msc
Hit OK. Group Policy Editor will open.

Go to:
Computer Configuration->Administrative Templates->Windows Components->Windows Messenger

Enable both of the policies listed. Enjoy.

That's a nice, tidy way to do it.
Thx Riddla.

I didn't have this issue until a recent Window's update.
St00pid Meesenger was loading up everytime I
opened Outlook Express.

{OF}dudio 04-16-2005 03:08 PM

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

... I should add that although the fix above did
indeed stop Messenger from loading with the
launch of Outlook Express, it now causes OE to
hang at its splash screen for about 10 seconds.
Not the end of the world, but worth mentioning.

{OF}blong 04-16-2005 07:15 PM

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

hmm i dont have that problem. wonder why it does that with yours.

{OF}dudio 04-16-2005 08:09 PM

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I only used the Group Policy Editor change that
Riddla just posted. Did you do any of the other tweaks blong?

no I did what riddla posted on first page not the group policy thing he posted like 4 posts up. hmm maybe thats the problem. something shouldnt have been unchecked that riddla said to uncheck? I dont know riddla would prob have to answer this one.

{OF}dudio 04-16-2005 11:16 PM

I imagine that there's still a registry setting
somewhere that tells Messenger to load with
Outlook Express, and I need to kill that.
I can find it if I was energetic, but that would
cut into my gaming time !

I'm on to something !

ya .. works fine now.
Actually, Outlook Express loads faster
than it ever has.
