if you read all of my post, you'd see that we had problems with our dell desktop too (though i wasn't specific).

and plis, a dell isn't worth it even if they do give you a free monitor. besides, dont you still have one from the dead computer?

I dont think he was talking to you about that anyway.

Drop the bashing of Dell, this isnt the thread for it, anymore posts about it will be removed from this thread.

Now back on topic......

noone is bashing anything..

he stated that he had bad luck with dell and doesnt recommend them..

But anyway comparing a PII to whats out now is like apples (the fruit not the company) and oranges... most companies came a long way from those days... even the celerons are running better... (and i'm not bashing celerons :P )

besides....just get the extended warranties which will outlast the technology by then and then start over when you need more power at that time!

i have the extended warranty but it doesnt seem like dell is willing to help me now that im in england and not the states.

anyway: is it really better to have 2 sticks of ram for a gig? i would've thought one would work well enough, epsecially since it's ddr and not rd

Yes, its a must. You want to sticks that way you have dual channel memory, therefore double the bandwidth. Having one stick cuts your bandwidth in half and severaly hurts performance.

Looks like a nice System, I have had Dells for years and they run fine for me, have one that has been running for almost 8 years and only had a burn out HD. Dont know anything about Media center. I would go with Pro if ya can afford it. I would go with a upper end Vid card like every one said before.

Chem thanks for the info on the Memory Didn't know that either.

Many confuse DDR and dual channel, but its very different.

DDR is a technology in which two instruction sets are executed on the memory for every cycle (Mhz). Therefore a 200Mhz DDR stick is equal to a 400Mhz SDRAM stick, this is where you get DDR400. This is also why DDR400 is only 200Mhz, which often confuses people.

Dual channel relates to the CPU and other components accessing the memory. Memory controllers have two channels these days. One channel for each pair of DIMM slots. So if you place only one stick in the computer the CPU can only access it through that channel, therefore it has less available bandwidth. Now if you add another stick in the other channel the CPU has two channels to access. And therefore it has double the bandwidth. Not all this bandwidth is used by a single core, but it certainly is by a dual core CPU. But a single core CPU still needs more than just a single channel can provide.

And that's why you want two sticks of memory.
