Weird su - logs you in as the root user on a local machine. Soul and I wouldn't think of that as most of the time we're hitting machines remotely via ssh. Still strange that su root doesn't work for you? Does your prompt change?

I was thinking that you were running the command under sudo. When you sudo a command you access your permissions from a group called wheel. Wheel has basically the same permissions as the root user.

if i'm not mistaken just typing "su" will not change your enviornment variables. When you type "su -" that switches you to that user as well as provides your eviornment variables etc. su - is assumed to be root. Could be wrong but i think that is how it went down. Seems to when you do a "su" it provides you with some functionality...such as ifconfig etc.

hmpphh.

grr i just realized ati gives next to nothing for linux support. I ahve been trying to figure out why ut2004 will run for a few minutes and then crash with a segmentation fault. when I realized its all driver support. the last thing I have to try is remove all card drivers/reboot/reinstal latest drivers and then go from there. other than that ati says I have to instal the xfree drivers wtf????

At first I thought it was a heat issue but its not. although this seems to be the only game that doesnt run right. I can run bf2 servers (vanilla with euro and sf at same time) without any problems.
