Several minutes ago, Sony officially launched their launch schedule for the PlayStation 3. The sub-$500 price is now official, as the base model, featuring a 20 GB hard drive, will be available worldwide on November 17th for $499 (USD). A higher-end model, featuring a larger 60 GB hard drive will be available for $599.

Sony plans on having 2 million units available on its November 17th launch date, with an additional two million available by the end of the year. By March 31st, 2007, Sony plans on having shipped 6 million PlayStation 3s.

In addition, Sony revealed an aspect of its controller remarkable similar to some of the Nintendo Wii's controller features, and a demonstration game was played in which a ship was piloted simply by moving the controller around in the air. The Sony PSP will also be able to directly communicate with the PS3, and a demonstration showed it being used as a rear view mirror for an F1 game, maintaining live syncronization with the PS3.

A variety of PlayStation 3 games will be playable on the E3 show floor beginning this Wednesday at 9 AM (PST), and we'll be bringing the coverage to you right here as well as on our E3 Moblog.

I'm still waiting for real in game footage and a new list of release titles. I believe the xbox 360 will cut its price around or just before the PS3 launch, so based on my feeling for the PS3 vids I may just get a xbox 360 at that time @ the discounted rate(hopefully with HD-DVD too).

$600 is alot for a console, what they also failed to mention is what you lose if you go with the lower end package... such as HDMI, WiFi and a few other things.

Not sure what Sony is trying to do here, maybe recoupe their R&D costs via the hardware initially. I don't think many of the hardcore PS kiddies will be able to get this right away.

Knew it. This is kind of like the Xbox 360 launch, no one will want the lower model (expect there's even more missing in the lower model 360) PS3.

I think Sony might have a flop on their hands, if they dont then you're talking about $1K consoles after this generation.

I also really dont believe Sony can complete the orders they talk about. I'm saying more around 4 million shipped (that's shipped, not sold) come March of 07.
