New Server
We are looking at building a new server and wanted to know what hardware you guys recommend. I am not looking at going way to overboard with a quad processor machine. But looking at a decent machine that would be a good server. My boss prefers to build the machines rather than buy prebuilt ones. Sorry Erad. I am just looking for a normal tower PC and not a rack. At least for this server.
Thanks for the help guys.
Mike

I am looking at going the AMD route. We only have 1 AMD in this office and the programmer is using it. They have been hardset in their ways of the Intel but their minds are opening a bit. I am just wondering if I should be looking at an Opteron or an Athlon chip.
I don't know too much about AMD stuff. I was also looking at the Dual Core processors.

A dual core Opteron should be great. It'd crush anything Intel has right now.
Depending on your needs I'd probably go with one of the lower end Opteron dual cores, reasonbly cheap.

I guess his boss doesn't like warranty's or stability.
I'd second Chem's suggestion.
I implemented a 4-way Dual Core Opteron HP DL585 recently and the thing smoked all the other HP Intel boxes we had.

Thanks LoPo for buying the #1 Industry Standard Server brand. Yeah, we have Dual Core 2 way (2p/2c) and 4 way (4p/2c) Opteron ProLiant servers as rack models, 2U and 4U, and Blades, but no Towers. We might have a 1U 2p/2c server coming with rev F, hint, hint....

Psycho, what application do you plan to run on the server? AMD is optimized for certain applications, and Intel for others. We would really need to know what you plan to run on it.
If you want to see what HP recommends, you can use the Tool that I developed and maintain as part of my job here at HP: http://www.hp.com/cgi-bin/sbso/buygu...uct_select.cgi
For those that care, here is the Storage Buying Guide that I developed and maintain:
http://www.hp.com/sbso/buyguides/pg_storage.html
Consider those Eradhardware... (Sorry for the play there Chem)

You can pick up those cute little HP Tower servers pretty cheap (ML Series 100 or 300)
What are you doing to be doing with the server? That would help make some suggestions..
