Well, I finally got a new fan installed to test the theory that it's running too hot, but when I find my CDs, I'll do that ISO thing for the memory test. If the fan helps though, the next task will be how to mount it without having to cut a hole in my case

I've discovered it's not a gfx temp problem because it's now massively cooled and it just hung while playing D3. Maybe the card really can't handle max settings (and I mean everything is to the max). When I locate where I left my CDs, I'll try the memtest thing, unless you guys come back here and tell me I shouldn't have everything maxed out, though I do on HL2 and I don't recall any issues.

72C is pretty hot blong, but these cards are made to withstand upwards of 130C. I doubt its hit related.

Capt, settings thing to max would not be casing such hanging. It'd only degrade performance, but things like this hanging are generally software related, or memory.

Get back to us once you've run memtest. This should really help us out to rule out the memory.

While your waiting for the store to open you could change your video settings to something lower just to be sure that its not something in the vid card. Set the game settings a little lower as well and if that works then your probably looking at a memory problem in the vid card or system. But then again I am just guessing, chem is more the technical expert than I am/

New update: I've been running D3 at lower settings for maybe an hour, and it's yet to hang. However, I'm not sure how likely that's the problem: it's happened in TFC and Scientist Slaughterhouse.

This time when it happened, Windows provided solutions. It said to make sure I have the newest drivers and to manually decrease the clock speeds. I'm doing the former as I'm writing this, but I don't know how to lower the clock speeds. Though, the odd thing is this is happening more in HL1 than HL2 or D3. Why might that be?
edit: I was finally able to read the message that the blue screen of death gave me and it said that the driver was stuck in an ininite loop.

Manually lowering the clocks would just be pointing to a hardware problem, which this doesnt sound like at all.

The fact that it happens in not very demanding games still points me to your memory, or your driver install.

You did install the chipset driver before the video driver? What order did you install them in?

Have you updated your BIOS?
