trouble with the new system

For some reason, when I'm playing a game the computer hangs every once in a while. The whole game freezes, my music stops, and not even control-alt-delete works. Then after a few moments it goes back to normal for a while. Someone suggested it's because the processor is switching from one core to the next, but I set the program's affinity to use only the 0 processor and it still does it. Any ideas?

If you've set the affinity (good boy) then you wouldnt have any "dual core" issues, and such issues are not usually dual core related anyway.

You've mentioned that the graphics card is OC'd, set it to default and watch the temps and see how things are. Also, watch out for visual artifacts, such as what appears to be snow, tons of screen tearing, or texture popping in and out.

Also, run your memory through a test of memtest86. Its the best memory tester out there.

I also assume that you have all the proper drivers and chipset stuff up to date. It could be a hitching problem related to hard drive swapping.

I you have an AMD processor: check out their list of drivers/utilities. I installed two updates myself and it has helped the stability of the system by quite a bit:

Why would it be the video card? Everything locks up.

because EVERYTHING you do goes through your video card so you can see it.. if the card overheates it cannot produce a picture for you to see therefore locking up the screen and the mobo untill it cools down a degree or two.

my system is set to reboot the computer if it overheats.. sorta like a fault protection so it doesn't really get hot.

Sound goes through the video card too? I'm not knocking you or anything; I'm just trying to understand this better. My mp3 player stops too when this happens. Also, is it something in the bios or through Windows to see the temp of the vid card? I was reading Newegg reviews of my case and someone had said that the gfx card doesn't get a lot of cooling from the case fans so I may need to try to install another.

Ok, after looking through your suggestions and looking at things on my computer, I think my video card is running too hot. Just on the desktop its at 44 degrees C so I'm guessing running HL2 or D3 at full settings is going to push it through the roof. I'm going to install a new fan or two (though I'm not sure where or how yet) to see if that helps.

You can download an ISO image to burn to a CD and boot off of them Insane. That way you don't need a floppy drive.

Works for me.
