Cable Modem
My Toshiba Roadrunner cable modem has died, tomorrow I'm going to go get another one from Time Warner.
Are there better performing cable modems other than what is supplied to you through your providers?
I could buy my own, but it only reduces my cable bill by $1.00 a month.

in that case I would just rent what they give you because:
they replace it for free saving you a couple hundred dollars:
and you never have to worry about anything on it . In all honesty I dont think there is much of a difference between modems other than some modems (older) can only support certain speeds.

Yeah, I've never seen a reason to buy an aftermarket modem. They all should be able to meet the speeds you're being given, and since the company is giving it to you then you know that it works with their service.

Not sure what he did, but i'll find out and post it for those that just dont know...

I bought my Cable Modem from my cable company and the only reason I bought it was they wanted $4 a month for rental. If it was only a $1 a month I would have rented it. Mine has been running for 2 years with no problems, it is a Toshiba. I would suggest if you do go to buy you own, to call the service provider and ask which ones are compatable with your cable system. Mine said they would give me a list if I wanted to buy my own.

My cable company Cox, has 9mbps up right now but it is pretty pricey. I was looking at thier web site and they listed all the compatable cable modems and I think I might upgrade my system to a Linksys WCG200. It is a cable modem and wireless route all in 1.

I bought my own cable modem for like $100 on Ebay 4 years ago. Key point is that it had to be DOXport 111 compatible back then. (and I was paying like $5/month for the modem rental so that made it worth buying one)
I'm with you Madd, for $1/month it ain't worth it.
I've got 5Mbp down, 256k up right now. Like MA, they offter a better service (10 Mb down, 1Mb up) but it's like $59/month (compared to $40/month for what I have) (Mediacom) though it does come with it's own wireless modem. Since I already have a wireless router that's no advantage to me either.

Yeah, I bought my cable modem a long time ago when I first got the high speed because they were going to charge $10 per month to rent one from them and Best Buy had a deal so the modem was like $120, for me its more than paid for itself.
