The Format Wars - Realtime Sales Coverage

Someone at Beyond3D posted these links, but I figured it'd be interesting to share with you all.

The DVD Wars - Compares prices, sales, etc of the formats software

Hardware Comparison - Compares the specs and prices, and most importantly the sales rank of the players at Amazon

From the links, especially the Amazon one you can clearly see that HD DVD is leading right now. This is caused by the fact that the Toshiba HD DVD player is actually an extremely good value, as it provides upscaling of DVD to HD resolutions that's equal to even the best dedicated upscaling units, it also is around half the price of the Samsung Blu Ray player, and from what I've read the current crop of HD DVD titles just simply look much better than Blu Ray titles.

Interesting to say the least, I was of the thought that Blu Ray would lead and leave HD DVD in the dust, seems to be not the case at all as HD DVD has had a very strong showing already.

That would solve hardware issues, but what about software. What determines which software would win? I for one dont want both Blu Ray and HD DVD on the market.

Well from a home entertainment perspective, if a device can be created to read both formats, then the majority of the consumers who these companies are trying to get to buy off on the technology will win regardless of which format wins.

You may care about software, but Toshiba and Sony care which one takes off with the consumer market and that will start in the home entertainment sector.
