First off, some sentence structure would rock.
Secondly, I know of no product out there that supports "90%" of codecs except a PC. Frankly its pointless to include a ton of codecs, there are a few key ones you need and that's it really. The rest can be handled by good conversion software.
The battle is not even going to be about supported codecs, or features, or any of that crap. Many products have LONG out done the iPod in this department, many products beat the iPod into the ground on every single area, but guess what, it means crap.
This market is nothing but marketing, its about producing a trendy product. Apple hit the nail on the head with the iPod on regards with looks. Because frankly, there's nothing specail about an iPod besides its looks.

I think you are missing part of the point of an iPod, and that is iTunes, as much as I despise it, for people who want to simply get their music onto their iPod and buy some new tunes, nothing is simpler. Windows Media player? hardly, even though the newest version made some great strides it still lacks and is not compatible with iPod. The media managers that come with the other devices that I have tried simply suck as well. I have an iPod and I don't use iTunes, I try and every now and then and it is getting better, just not where I want it yet. Apple makes things simple, and when it is simple people adopt it quicker IMO.
You have to remember that most computer users are not like the members of this board.

Most computer users can open up an explorer window and drag and drop music though, how can it get any more simple than that?
Many devices deploy such a method and also had many advances features. I guess you could say they'd run into possible tagging issues but generally when you rip your own CDs its not that hard for the program you're using to grab the right tags. Also, a program like Tag&Rename allows extremely easy methods of grabbing information from databases such as freedb or the Amazon database.
To me the iPod could be a great device if it was more free. If I throw on a modified OS I void the warranty just because I wanted to use a decent codec such as FLAC.
Frankly Apple and AAC is doing to the DAP market as to what MS does with the OS market. You have a terribly hard time doing the switch. Funny enough, MS gets sued millions because of that, while Apple gets to practice it and become the darling of the DAP revolution.

Chem, just face it, the iPod does what it does well. If you want feature bloat then feel free to use another DAP player. The iPod and the ITMS are easy to use, play music well and have a "cool" factor. You may bash Apple and the Ipod but somehow I think their market research is better than something you could come up with.
As far as why you don't like AAC? AAC is easily one of the best, most lossless file formats available today. Hands down better than WMA and FLAC? yeah I'm sure the MS DAP will support it...
Chem you said "MS could offer a converting software, people would use it". Umm, yeah.. wouldn't that require MS to break the DRM? Honestly I would expect more out of you as far as arguments go.
Tell you what let's just revisit this in a year and we'll see what happened.

Chem's got a hardon for this because a company with enough power has come to the table against Apple, simple as that. Will they over take the iPod? Simply stated, no. Their music service will have to offer features iTunes doesn't for this happen. Until we get further details on that part of this rollout, I don't think anyone can make a clear assumption on the outcome.
