AMD and ATI Merger Confirmed
http://chemicalhardware.com
Two links to full information on the first post.
Anyone else shocked? I know I am. This rumor had actually been going on for about a month now. No one wanted to believe it because this could be very bad depending on the direction that AMD wants to take with ATi.
I also think it was rather stupid of AMD to lay down $5.5 billion for a company that all they really needed was chipsets for. I dont know, its so hard to see how this is going to work.
Could be either be REALLY bad or REALLY good.

I don't like this merger either, it takes ATI out of the competive picture because they will be biased now, so future products will be biased

Well, the plans coming out of AMD certainly sound impressive. Basically AMD is going to be promoting platforms in about 2 or so years.
Right now, I can say that R600 from ATi is not going to be effected and R700 might not be, they are just so far ahead into development that it would be unwise for AMD or ATi to just throw all of that spent money away.
Also, dont expect AMD to lock other people from making chipsets for them. Nvidia, Via, etc are more than welcome to continue to do so, as that is good for AMD also.
Thinking about it for the long term, this is great for AMD. They couldnt have survived without this move. The market move is to a platform, which AMD couldnt do before, but with ATi they can do it with ease as they have some of the best chipset and graphics talent in the world with them now.
Its hard to say if this is bad or good yet, its certainly interesting, and we most likely wont see the real effects of it for a few more years.

lol, you think this was about chipsets? lol.
Nah man, you need to think on a broader scope there.

Here's what it was about: Creating a platform like Intel has done.
That means, the chipset, the graphics, the CPU, the everything.
In around 2 years the plan is to bring a GPU onto the CPU die for the low end. Making it more efficent.
Also, ATi was the company that first wanted this. They put themselves on the market to be bought up. AMD was the buyer, and its probably going to work out very well.
They have confirmed that funding for top end graphics will continue. Which is a good thing. They realize the marketing power and also the development power that it provides with having the top performing solution.
I know that the ATi people are very happy about this. And it seems the move is a good thing. It makes AMD a MUCH stronger company.

Oh yeah, I thought you might find this fact interesting Lopo: ATi has more engineers than AMD, that's even including the engineers that work only at AMD fabs.
This means from the deal that AMD is doubling their engineering talent. That's impressive.
