If it's THAT bad, I would recommend formatting and starting fresh. Getting all your updates, adding a firewall, adding some adware software such as MS Antispyware that proactively monitors....then and only then do you begin to browse other websites.

Just watch what you download and do not use any p2p software if you want to be safe.

Heh yeah same with my pc. I only really use it to game and watch movies (22" NEC MultiSync and 5.1 surround) though and surf this site and 1 or 2 others on occasion. Other than that I use my PowerBook for everything. 15" inch PB but I have a 19" monitor attached at home.

Thanks everyone... I printed this out and hopefully we'll figure out a way to burn his important things to a CD so we can do this.

I know he's been saving up for a new computer (to play BF2... omg he is OBSESSED with those videos. Every time I go over there we have to watch 30 minutes of BF2 videos before we do anything else) so I guess as soon as he's got enough he'll get one. But I think it's a good idea for him to get this older computer fixed up too.

Thanks for all your suggestions.

Yeah there is no working spyware on the Mac yet an no viruses in the wild. Only viruses are vb script or proof of concept and I believe those have been addresed. I'm no fool and I'm sure market share has something to do with it but a *NIX based system is more secure for a number of reasons one being that any alteration to system files requires password entry of root or an admin acct. The worst thing any of the proof of concept viruses could do was wipe the users home directory. System files would remain untouched.
