not cool, now psu going
I've got an Antec 500W power supply, I forget what type, that has two fans on it: one inside the case and one outside. The outside one isn't running, which I'm guessing is bad and means I need a new PSU. Anyway, I'd like something uber cheap. I found AMD brand ones on Pricewatch for $20-ish, but I'm not sure if they're any good.

Are you going to use this new PS to test? if so then I would go cheap if that is the only use. I personally would spend the extra $40-ish and get a new Antec. then you know your PS is in good shape.

Well, that's why I'm asking if that's a good brand for a PSU. An Antec that's over 500 watts is still pretty expensive. I just spend $180 on an X1950XT so I don't really have the money right now for a $100+ PSU, though I may wait till summer to get it anyway. But at the same time, I'm afraid if the PSU isn't working, it'll b0rk my new card

Play a game for awhile, the fans on my PSU literally shut off unless needed, while depending your Antec's particular model that could be the same setup. So... load the computer and see if it kicks on after a bit. If not then this one would be a decent choice for a cheap PSU. A PSU is part of the foundation of a system, a bad PSU could ruin your entire system, its okay to go cheap but not $20 cheap, you're just asking for major trouble then.

No, you don't. The requirements state you do because its easier to tell someone you need 500 watts than 15A on the 12+ line. You're computer is likely to be using around 250 watts.

OK, thanks guys. Do you have a list of companies that are safe to buy PSUs from? Newegg has a lot of deals, but I'm not sure if they're from respectable companies or not.

Such a list is not really possible, you'd have to go down the the original OEM to find out if it is worth buying. The one's that are always good are out of your price range such as Seasonic, Corsair, PC Power and Cooling. Other than that you must pay attention to the specific model, yes even Antec on that regard.
