Monitors
my next will be a flat screen but i'm not sure whether or not to go wide.
I play the CSS, BF & Quake series, SoF2 and UT's and was wondering how they look on wide. Does it distort the picture to fill the monitor or clip the sides like on a TV?
And does anyone play these on Vista?

In order for you not to have distortion the game must support widescreen ratios. If it does not then you will get distortion. Not exactly sure what you mean by clipping. Older games might be a problem, and even some new ones but that is quickly changing. Any major title should have support for them.
As for Vista on those games, BF2 works, CS:S works, I can for sure confirm those. The other 3 most likely do as well I would imagine, but some searching on Quake and UT can give you an answer (Quake 3 would mean SoF2 nearly 100% too since its the same engine).

clipping i mean the games plays in its 4:3 aspect and there is a black bar on each side filling in the 'widescreen' part. like watching a regular TV program on a widescreen TV. Kinda like watching a widescreen movie on a regular tv, you get those black bars on the top&bottom though.

Ahh, borders. A monitor won't do that. On TVs that's what the DVD player is adding to maintain the aspect ratio, it could fill but then it would be distorted.
Monitors on the other hand won't do that unless you have a feature called 1:1 pixel mapping, many cheap monitors don't have that though. That will match the resolution exactly pixel for pixel on the monitor and unused pixels are simply black. A monitor on the other than that is widescreen will simply stretch the image to fill the screen which will cause distortion. The only way to avoid that is by playing games that support widescreen resolutions. However, the distortion is not that bad for some and many won't notice it.

5ms is a good response time. From what I've seen 8ms is more typical; higher on cheaper monitors.
My 22" Samsung SyncMaster 226bw has a 2ms response time w/ a 3000:1 contrast ratio. It normally $340 at Newegg, but is on sale this weekend for $270 (after $40 MIR): Newegg.com - SAMSUNG 226BW Black 22" 2 ms (GTG) DVI Widescreen LCD Monitor 300 cd/m2 700:1(DC 3000:1) - Retail
The HP W2007 is a 20" and $260 at Newegg: Newegg.com - HP w2007 Black-Silver 20.1" 5ms DVI Widescreen LCD Monitor 300 cd/m2 1000:1 Built in Speakers - Retail
At full price for the Samsung, the additional $80 gets you 2" more screen, 3x the contrast ratio, the same brightness, and additional quality due to not paying for speakers that you are not going to use anyway. (and 812 reviews at Newegg that gave it a 5, compared with 4 reviews of the HP that rate it a 5 - make that 813 5s, since I haven't written one for them. )
UT3, Crysis, and Bioshock all support widescreen displays and produce no distortion nor black-banding on the edges.
