freezing issue

so my computer seems to lock up after being on for a while. two days ago i was playing wow for like 2-3 hours, then got off and was watching tv on it (tv tuner). then the screen froze but the sound kept going, i could still hear tv like it was going. tried doing a hard shutdown and starting it but the POST never came. did it like 3 times before it POSTed, came up into windows for a minute and then froze again. yesterday i was playing wow for a while and then it locked up again, again the sound kept going, it didnt studder or anything. again when trying to start it again the lights came on but it didnt POST. sprayed the heatsink on the cpu and tried to get into the video card with compressed air. started it and tried to go into bios to lower cpu clock (2.66ghz @ 3ghz) and it locked up then.

so what does this sound like? video card overheating is what i'm thinking since the sound continues the cpu seems like it would still work.

Do you have another video card laying around? Swap it for a few days.

Yep, it is the video card, I had this happen on my 6800gt.

When I moved to a new case with better cooling the problem went away.

Possibly the video card, also on the CPU depending on what heatsink you're using, you might want to physically remove the fan as dust might have formed a layer caked together. Though that usually takes some time to happen.

Download a program like RivaTuner when you can (assuming the lockups are not that bad yet) and monitor the temperatures and see what it looks like.

what about the PSU going bad? I mean if the PSU is going bad and is unable to supply the right amount of power that could cause the video card to not properly be able to send a signal to the monitor

from my limited experiences yes it would. I am not saying I am right but just giving out an option. I dont care how good a PSU brand is there will always be someone who gets a bad product from them. i mean they could make 1000 PSU's and 2 of them could be bad. you never know. I mean you could even get a brand new one that is bad.

Hi cheese,
Wow blew up my 6600 vid card on my main comp as well. There are nuuumerous posts on the wow support forum and most have cards like ours. Bliz has no fix and it seems tohave come with the exp and last patch moreso.

My card temps and such were fine, and I wasnt sureif it was the ram or card.

I dont think it will get any better, and with no solution, I cancelled my 2 accounts. Time to move on anyway
