Single Malt Scotch

I'm starting to aquire a taste for Single malt scotch and am wondering if any of my smelly brother induldge and if so what is thier favorties. Also what do you find the best way to taste? With water, with ice, straight.

I've just starts so my pallet has only been intorduce to bottles under $40.

Tried Glenmornagie (10 and 12)... It got me hooked to try another
Glenfidich (12) Tastey
Dalmore (12) Very Tasty

Dying to try some others.

Anyway. I'm lifting a glass to all of you at the LAN Party Enjoy.

Ahhhhh my favorite subject.

I recommend:

Macallan (12)
Dalwhinnie (15)
Johnny Walker (from cheap to expensive: Red, Black, Green, Blue) (all of these are blends though)
Balvenie Double Wood (12)

There are some cheaper single malts out there worth trying:
McClelland's (highland or Islay) should be about $25/bottle
Speyburn. (not my fav but not bad)

I really like the peaty Islay flavors the best.

My personal favorite: Lagavulin (16). It's hard to find and about $75 a bottle but sooooooo good.

I recommend you buy a good book to read up on it:

Whiskey, a definite World Guide by Michael Jackson (no not the singer). Really helped me and a fun browsing book.

Ah and in terms of taste: very personal.

I started off with just ice and give it a little time. You need some water in there (from the ice) to release the taste properly.

I don't like it "neat" (no water or ice) but for the better (generally more $) ones I put hardly any ice in at all.

Takes some experimenting (hard work I know) to find out what works for you.

I try to read up on the different brands and then try a bottle of what sounds appealing. Been playing around with Scotches for a year or so now and finally starting to figure out what I really like.

Sometimes Scotches that sound alike in terms of tasting notes can be quite different: Lagavulin and Laphroaig seem close by description but I don't like the Laprhoaig at all (too "oily" for me)

I can just keep going on this.....

Thanks for the info.

I will try to give all three of those a try. It's kind of like cigars not sure what I like and don't like yet, just not enough experince to form an opinion, yet.

I was looking at a book last week at B&N, It was well laid out etc I may go back this week and get it can't remember the author.

I like the ice cube, cause as you say it releases some of the flavors, I also don't mind the few degrees cooler.

Again thanks for the recommendations.

Here's my collection of flavors so far (almost all MT...)

Several took a couple of bottles to make sure.

Also, I'm running out of room so some are not showing
