This is so stupid its not funny, in fact its ridiculous. This is in no way a good thing. Yes, lets split the formats even more so that HD adoption slows down even further... Majority of people are happy with DVD, therefore one solid format is needed to make the switch to HD optical media. If you have to weak formats going for it... its just not going to happen. Bad, bad, bad, bad, bad!

Paramount was paid $50M for the switch and Dreamworks $150M. Not much in the grand scheme of things, I'm assuming there was a larger reason for the switch. Its certainly not HD-DVD being the "better" platform, so I'm curious as to the real reason.

We will probably never know. I know universal's CEO was saying that he wanted the format war to continue because its driving down prices of players/movies etc etc for the consumer. Which it has I mean blue ray in the beginning was 1k for stand alones and now they are down to $447 at sams club and hd dvd is down to $199. i mean thats more than a 50% drop in price and it hasnt even been what a year now since coming out.

Prices would drop just as quick if the market grew to be large enough. We won't see truly cheap players till Chinese knockoffs start popping up. I don't see at all how Universal can say this is good. Prolonging the adoption of an HD optical media means digital distribution will gain even further ground on it. So, instead of proprietary hardware we'll have proprietary formats (cable card anyone? yuck.). Choose your poison is all I can say. At this point though and the recent announcement of major movies (Transformers, Shriek) going to HD-DVD, I can't blame either format to continue. This should have been avoided at all costs, but it wasn't. Sony/Blu-Ray must have done something mighty big to piss of Paramount and Dreamworks.
