thinking of upgrading

I'm thinking of getting an E6750 CPU, but I'm not sure of a good mobo to go with it. I don't know if it matters having a widely known brand (like Gigabyte), but I'd prefer not spending more than about $120US. Doesn't have to be SLI enabled, but might be nice.I would like high bus speeds, though. For RAM, I'm thinking of 2x2gb DDR2 1066, probably OCZ.

1.) Get a Q6600 instead of a E6750. Quad core is the better investment.
2.) Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3R is the motherboard I'd go with in that price range.

I don't know. It puts my price at nearly $400 without RAM

Let's put it this way, I think a Quad Core is probably a better investment than 4GB at this point unless you've been finding yourself using tons of memory lately. For only about $70 over the E6750 I'd say another two cores is certainly worth it.

Ok, so let's say I go wtih the Q6600. I want 1066mhz Corsair XMS quality RAM to go with it without the XMS price (which is about $200). What should I get? I know you said Gskill is good, but the name alone sounds shady.

Well for one there no point in going with 1066Mhz, you're going to gain very little from the 1:1 memory divider, memory controllers are well beyond the point where its worth the money. Therefore I would buy this.

for a 'semi to serious gaming' machine would you choose quad over dual cpu, and why?

It's the better long term investment considering prices as of right now. For about $70 you're basically getting an entire second processor compared to the cheaper one. While multile core performance certainly is not linear, neither is the price increase. Also, thanks to the consoles being multi core architectures scaling is improving with each new game and engine. So if you plan on having this processor for over a year and a half, maybe longer, it is a much better purchase IMO.

I'm not sure I understand your answer, Chem. Miller is talking about Asus L1N64-SLI, which has two physical processors versus an Intel quad core cpu. Newegg.com - ASUS L1N64-SLI WS Dual L (1207FX) NVIDIA nForce 680a SLI MCP SSI CEB AMD Motherboard - Retail
edit: My friend says this is the better way to go, even with the price as steep as it is. His arguments make sense; however, I'm worried about how AMD is going to fare with the new processor they've got in the works (the Barcelona or something like that). I don't want to be stuck with a losing company again

Ummm, you sure? Not how I read it... (As far as MT's question).

AMD's processor won't keep up most likely... I wouldn't be shocked if AMD is not around in another two or three years time at this current pace.
