Detroit area peeps.. might need some help!
After about what? almost 2 years of being on unemployment ( would not wish that on anyone ) I have a possible job lined up in Romulus, MI.
I have a pre-employment physical this week Thursday in Toledo, OH. and and once they clear me on my credit and back ground check, as long as the physical goes ok, I should receive a final offer. So barring a huge misfortune I should be moving to MI very soon.
As for the help.. I know nothing of the area for locating good schools or house for rent. Google only captures soo much and all.. but when reading reviews, etc.. I wonder the state in which those who write bad reviews do so in.
If anyone has any input or general knowledge of the area, any input would be appreciated!
My main focus is to keep my son happy.. he is a freshman and is in JROTC here and wants to remain in the program.. there are serveral schools that offer it, but again.. reviews make me scratch my head. Wayne county HS and South Gates Anderson seem to be the best choice from what bit I have read.. and picking the right school will then guide me to looking in that school zone for houses to rent. I don't plan on staying there long, so only wish to rent for the time being.
Anyways.. again, any input of good and bad if you can would be most helpfull and appreciated in advance.
Once I know I have the job, the expect me to be in MI and working within 2 weeks tops according to the 2nd chair interviewer. The job is mine to lose and the few weeks are going to be hectic!
TY in advance again.

I echo everyone else in the congrats and don't know much about the area. I am sure some input for the MI OF's will be forthcoming.

well I will say you picked a Good part of detroit. I dont tend to travel to Detroit very often but I have been there. Heck I went to romulus about a year ago to help a friend move to this side of the state. I cant help you with the school situation since 99.99% of my life has been spent in west and southwest michigan. You can look at a bright side of only being about 3 or so hours from cedar point and the kalahari . But like I said with what little I know its not one of the "bad" places to live in detroit area. Romulus DOES have one of the BIGGEST saltwater aquarium warehouse in the world called the Tropicorium Specializing in Live Coral Live Rock Mini Reefs. Awesome place to go in. Huge VATS of coral and fish. Lots of sharks, anemones just about anything you can think of they got it. they also have a pond area.
There are many rental properties and apartments around the area if I remember my 400 mile motorcycle trip I took around detroit 2 years ago....
oh and congrats on the new job.

Great news and good luck RS!!
I know the area vaguely but not well enough to make recommendations. On the plus side you should be able to find something relatively cheap!

romulus is where the airport is located, so watch out for takeoff patterns if you live there. a general rule of thumb is farther northeast is cheaper.
southgate is solidly "downriver" and has a redneck reputation but i don't know it at all, i lived in the NW burbs like novi, wixom, and walled lake. the nice areas are north of romulus to canton and plymouth, great schools too.
southwest of romulus gets pretty rural if you like that. stay away from Ypsilanti if possible, although it would cheap, schools arent good.
south is rural, and a pretty area. it also puts you near a metropark, which is a nice rec area. east is older cities, where you'll probably find a lot of rentals, such as taylor and southgate, and really cheap houses. taylor isn't a bad place.
nice thing about working in romulus, there are highways going there from every direction because of the airport. makes living longer away easier.
grats on the job!
