After several attempts to shut off the car by using the ignition button, he was successful.

ETRS (Electronic Transmission Range Selection) - You can put the little stick wherever you want but it only shifts the transmission if it wants to.

To shut off the engine I think you have to hold the off button for three seconds when it's at highway speeds to get it to actually turn off. In park (when you have hit the button every other time) it just does it immediately. So if you've never had to shut it off at highway speeds it isn't intuitive.
Let's just say Toyota isn't making any friends these days.

Sounds to me like they are hiring fools for designers and that those guys are working for Dilbert's pointy-haired boss.

It's a scary thought that there may be cars made today that one cannot put into neutral swiftly and surely or that one cannot immediately turn off (without locking the steering wheel and losing your power brakes for that matter).
To me, fly by wire in a car is just asking for trouble. Fly by wire is cool if you have redundant fail-safe systems in place but how much would that cost? A $65,000 Kia anyone?

you turn off ANY new vehicle and your pump shuts off making it manual steering instead of power steering which as most people growing up with manual will tell you is a PAIN to do lol.

Blong, the old manual steering was geared in the steering box different than the power steering box.
That's why back when......... the auto's with power steering were so hard to steer when the pump was not turning.
Regular manual steering was only a bear if you were setting still.
Gave age away there.... didn't I

That really bothers me. I see both of those (being able to switch to neutral and being able to turn off the ignition) as basic safety features that should be in any vehicle.
I don't think I would buy a vehicle that does not have them both.

Also, companies such as VW, Audi and Porsche, have set their Drive By Wire to have the brakes override the accelerator, as in, if you step on both at the same time (or if the computer thinks the gas is at full throttle), the brake sends a signal to return the engine to idle. Brake override is a software algorithm that gives the brakes precedence over the accelerator. They implemented this over the last 20 years, model dependent. What it does is closes the throttle body if the gas and brake are pressed at the same time. Or even if it percieves that the throttle pedal is pressed. Also, their latest cars use electric assisted brakes and power steering instead of vacuum/hydraulic, which, if the engine quits/stalls, and there is still power in the battery, both still work in an assisted powered mode. Several reports have suggested that this should be the norm for all drive by wire cars, to have the brakes override the engine speed.
Feds Consider Brake Override On New Cars
My 2 cents.
