Fortunately we had a french drain installed in our basement, which is a tube that runs around the perimeter of the basement at the bottom of each wall and meets at the sump. It has worked flawlessly.

Some of our neighbors were not so proactive and there seems to be quite a few flooded basements.

It's easy to tell who was affected by the amount of garbage that was out on the curb today. I haven't ventured out to some of the more effected towns yet, but what my friends tell me the water has yet to recede.
