Logitech G5 mouse
Ok, first I had bought a Razer Diamondback a couple of months ago. The Razer is a great mouse with terrible side buttons. I like all the buttons I can get but the Razer's buttons I could not get used to. It's very fast and smooth but the feel is totally different from the Logi 510 I had previously. I could get used to the feel but not the buttons. So I picked up the G5 even though they got rid of the forward button, which I had no problem with in the 510. But they added side scrolling and those actions are programmable. The big big thing for me, though, is the application specific settings. Finally we have that again and it works just fine. Also, I'm finding the ability to seperate the x and y axis on the mouse works very neat. You can set it up so you spin around on the x axis in the game incredibly fast but the up and down movements on the y axis aren't so squirrly. The diamondback has this ability also. The G5 is faster at 2000dpi. I just like the feel and the way the G5 fits my hand much better than the Razer.
Logi says they got rid of the forward button because so many people were making mistakes clicking in game. This is bogus to me because if that were true those people could have disabled the button in game in the application specific settings! Because of my hand I have to reverse the left click and right click functions and at first I was very disappointed with the G5 because you can't do it in their software but I found I can do it in windows mouse properties.
In short, taking the forward button away was somewhat of a blow that I have problems with forgiving but the Logitech G5 is by far the best mouse I have ever used, I love this thing!

Your right about disabling it ER... but I am one of those people that did just that on the logi.... I like the looks of this G5 though and for one am glad they did away with the forward.... In UT I would accidently hit it and cause everything to go haywire... lost many battles because of it until I finally said fook it and disabled it... it was just to easy to accidently hit it.

Yep and the problem with the earlier Logi mice was when you disabled it for UT you disabled it in all applications. When you went back to browsing and wanted to use the forward button....it was disabled there too and you had to open the program and switch it back. Doesn't sound like much but what a huge hassle to keep doing.
That's what I like so much about application specific settings, you set it up once and then the settings are applied to whatever application is in focus. Now you can disable the forward butoon in UT and when you quit the game and come here to browse it automaticly switches back to the forward button (if that makes any sense:-). No wait, now we can set it up like that.....but they took away the button. These guys make decisions sometimes that amaze me. Didn't they discuss the situation and arrive at the conclusion that they could make both of us happy? The dang thing sells for $70 (although I found it at TigerDirect for $54.95 plus $5 shipping) anyway, I would have paid more for that daggone button. Then it would it be available to be mapped for a function in AutoCad or in UT, for that matter, if I so chose. A small thing, I know, but it's these small things that make a great product, perfect.
But I'm quibbling here. For me, this is a great mouse.

OMG, I love the forward button, how can you live with it? I have big hands, but I've never had a problem with hitting it, I dont rest my thumb on those keys though, I rest it in the groove.
ER, sounds like you would have licked the MX518, about the same sensor, 2000dpi and 1600dpi to me really are not very different at all.
Also, have you messed around with the weights? I thought there method of doing that was cool. Raptor gaming had already done it, but their system was bad and they simply had a crappy mouse.
When looking at mice I can only see me getting a Logitech. The Razor mice are simply the worst possible design ever, even having my hand on one for just a bit at a store started hurting, its so unnatural for either a righty or a lefty. The Logitech fits perfect, has the perfect button layout for me. I might possibly upgrade again if they add back the forward button, but that button is esstenial to my CS:S gameplay as I never have to scroll now for weapons, simply hit the forward button to pop out my pistol, and back one for grenades.

Chem, you could map those actions to the side scrolling buttons and this would free up the back button for something else.
I really considered the 518 but without the application specific software it was a no go for me. At least I don't think the 518 had it, I could never figure that out and without knowing for sure I wouldn't get it.
The weight system works very good and is simple to setup. The new feet they've put on it are very smooth. The worst problem I've heard of with this mouse is the fact that it's a lazer, not optical and a lot of guys are finding it doesn't work with their expensive mouse pads.

What's a mouse pad? I haven't used one of those in years.

Weird, the laser mice are supposed to work with EVERY surface, or at least that's the claim of companys with them (Logitech and M$).
I'm fairly certain the MX518 comes with the software, it was marketed as a gaming mice.
As for the scroll buttons, they are to far out of the way, my guess is that I hold the mouse in a weird way. Sometimes configs people use for the extra mouse buttons dont make a lot of sense to me, and the config I sometimes use doesnt make sense to them. I have thought about mapping reload to one of those center scroll function though, but that seems to far out of the way.

I have a razor diamondback and I love it for the speed and responsiveness. However, I agree the side buttons are a bad design. I have fairly large hands and I can't use 3 of the 4 side buttons because of it. I just keep using it for the reasons above. I used a razor boomslang for several years and I was in love with it just because it fit my hand like a glove. Since it was a mechanical rather then an optical mouse I switched to the diamondback.
Guess I need to look into the logitech G5 It looks pretty kewl on the website but I need to put my hands on one. Also, for gaming I use my mouse on the left hand so I don't know how well that will work for me.

I use the Logitech MX500, simply the best darn mouse I have ever used. I only use the 2 mouse buttons and the back for gaming though. Since I use Mouse1 for move forward and Mouse2 for move back, I cannot use the wheel or the 3 other buttons near the wheel! My fingers are always too busy.

Whoa, Metal that has to be the most messed up config ever. Using the mouse for movement just sounds impossible!
