garage roof ?

Ok I got a hole in my garage roof. What is the best way to go about patching this hole and reshingling that spot. can I just take a saw cut out the bad area plus a couple inches and then put a new piece of plywood down and then slide shingles under the good old ones until the area is covered? Or should I remove the full 4x8 sheets (2 of them) and replace the whole 4x8 sheet and reshingle the 2 full 4x8 sheets? I have never done roofing before so I figure a garage would be a nice place to learn as its not where I live lol.

you have to cut out from one truss to the other truss and half way accross each truss. Then go to Lowes and buy 4 or of the little H looking clips to hold the new inline with the old plywood.

Then reshingling is the easy part. Just remember that you want to pry up the old ones carefully so as not to break them. Water runs downhill ( most of the time) so keep the shingles well overlapped. Just follow the original lines and you should have no troubles at all..

Or just make the hole bigger (6 " ) and then put a roof vent on

lol last summer I had carpenter ants and it softened the material. I also had termites in the shed behind the garage (guy built it from scratch and you could tell cause it was poorly built) so when I took it down I got terminex out to add the centuron and killl the ants. well I guess the rain slowly caused it to fall out. it had to of been leaking before but I didnt know until I saw the ants. I am beginning to see more and more the guy who rebuilt some of this house did a piss poor job of just about everything he did. Its as if he rushed everything instead of taking his time.

If you have had termites/ants up in your hole area you'll find the damage much more extensive once you start taking the shingles off. Get yourself an awl and start stabbing it into the wood once you get it exposed, and you'll probably find alot will need to be replaced. You also need to check the rafters below the sheeting. The termites/carpenter ants will hollow out the top cord rafter, and it will look intact, but it is nothing but a honeycomb. This is particularly dangerous if you are going to walk around up there, because the weakened would not hold you weight.
This happened to me on a porch flat roof remodel. I found myself inside the porch with about a half million pissed off carpenter ants and virtually the entire porch roof 16x12.

I have been there and done this on the back of my old farm house and barn. I ended up replacing most of the sheeting on the lower half of the roof and had to replace most of the 2x4 rafters. & pumped in lots of ant poison.

Hopefully it is just rot, and you won't need to replace as much wood.
