LAN help?
Hi all - I've got UT2k4 installed on Sharon's PC, and we both connect to my wireless router. I connect via a CAT5, she connects wirelessly.
Both of us have tried starting listen LAN games, and neither can see the game in the LAN window. We've both tried with firewalls configured to allow UT2K4.
Anything I may have missed here? Do I need to set up drive sharing or do something funky in my router???
Thanks in adavnce for any help....

You may have to open some ports on your router, but generally that is only to allow outside clients to get in.
One thing to try would be to disconnect your internet cable from your router, and then disable/quit any software firewalls you may have (Windows firewall, any other third party stuff like Norton, Trend Micro, ZoneAlarm, etc etc etc) and see if that makes a difference.
What firewall and router are you using?

Hi Dutch - I'm using Windows Firewall (XP Pro), so is she, but she's got Norton's tied into it as part of her Norton's Security Suite.
Internet cable from the router - you mean, the cable coming from the cable modem?

Bear, I would recommend that you disable both firewalls and see if that helps. If it does then you need to open some ports on your firewall programs to allow access. I would have to do some quick digging to find out what ports and how to allow them. With XP's built in Firewall it is fairly easy. It should be easy with Norton's but I would have to do some checking to see how to forward the ports.
Hope that helps.

Yeah, sorry Bear, should have been clearer. Disconnecting the internet cable is the one coming from the modem, just being safe if you're going to turn off your security stuff (better safe then sorry I guess). Then disable both firewalls. I'm suspicious of Norton, it can get really zealous sometimes. If you can then play, turn on one (start with your Windows firewall) and see if it still works after that. That way you can figure out which one is causing the problem.

Dutch - we found the culprit. She had a firewall setting on her wireless connection that stayed on even after we turned off firewall in the XP Security Center. After we unchecked that box, all good. Then all she had to do was dl all the JB stuff on my machine...

I will, Dutch - no one's been out there when I've gone to visit. I think you guys play around the time I usually go to the gym. We'll figure it out.
We played our first LAN games last night, she's tweaking her settings and trying to get used to the weaponry and the general FPS methodology - she's basically an RTS/Adventure gamer - but she does seem to like UT.
