I have mixed feelings about this. Clearly Michelin boned the pooch with the tire problem and from a “rulebook†standpoint FIA did the right thing.
However, I would think the FIA would be much more concerned about the sponsors and ultimately the fans than anybody else. They couldn’t have been daft enough to realize that this ruling would alienate a lot of people and I can’t believe that a problem of this magnitude would have fallen strictly into the “ordinary†rulebook. I would think they would have some emergency provisions allowing them to bend some rules “Matrix style†to reach a compromise. It’s one think to exclude 1 or 2 teams but to exclude the majority of the field? Either allow the Michelin teams to compete with airlifted tires for a fraction of the points they would have normally received (you think they would still compete for the sake of their sponsors) or something that doesn’t involve modifying the course. I know a few people that made the journey to Indy and they are reporting a lot of hostility – the kind that people don’t forget in a day or two. Yeah the problem is Michelin’s fault but the FIA bears a lot of responsibility for the catastrophe – well in my mind anyhow.
This is why I like WRC and rally racing in general. The course is rough? It’s supposed to be fool, now go race!! Plus there’s an in-car camera so if the fans (inches away from the road) are showing you “stuff†you can review the video footage in slow-motion later.
