Directv's new HD channels

Well today Directv added looks like about 21 new channels in HD. I must say after being spoiled with Discovery HD theatre for so long these new channels actually look pretty bad. Better than regular tv but you can tell they are clearly upscaled and not very well upscaled at that. At least they are attempting to get rid of 480i/p shows lol.

So what I am saying is the new HD channels like TLCHD History HD, Discovery HD, espn HD etc etc look better than your normal non hd channels they dont look anywhere as good as Discovery HD theatre and other HD channels that already existed. maybe they will get better over time I dont know but for now they arent "mind blowing" for quality. Though someone with a 720p tv might not notice a huge difference, wont know till I see smiley again lol.

*note I am not comparing these to 1080p hd dvd and blu-ray as that would be a pointless comparison considering I dont believe cable/sat providers dont have the bandwidth to be able to send 1080p as they barely have the bandwidth to provide 1080i.

They don't, DirecTV's HD is 1080i.

duh everyone knows that. I was just pointing out that im not comparing it so people wouldnt think I am trying to do so.

on another note there are some "engineering" channels that need a private access card the gen public cant get but at least the list gives you an idea whats coming up (like the disney channel).

My HD receiver gets installed the evening of the 3rd, I'll let you know what I think afterwards. The only thing I have to compare the DTV HD channels to are 1080i upverted DVD movies, so it will probably look great to me.

From what info I got during signup, the DTV signals are compressed HD signals that are basically MPEG4.

Yeah they are sending the signal at around 8-18MBPS which if they are compressing the signal from HD DVD or Blu-ray they are taking it from anywhere in the range of 21-41MBPS down to 8-18MBPS. Either way still looks better than reg tv .

Duh! I didn't know either

But Direct TV sucks. I was all signed up for it and they never showed then said they might be able to hook me up a week later.

I told them to take a hike.....
