sony kp57hw40 hdtv on the fritz

im pissed

my sony rear projection has been fine for 5 1/2 years, tonight i turn it on and the picture is concave and the color convergence is way off. searched the net and have found several other people with this problem, but no solutions except a list of things that it could be, including a bad board. so much for sony quality

i mean, less than 6 years for a tv that had a list price of $3200?!?! wtf?

projection tv's are actually one of the easiest things to fix. The reason is that they are one of the few new electronic devices out there that still try to be analog.

The good news is it's likely one $5.00 chip that is bad, and that chip would probably be obvious (I.E. you don't need any equipment to test for the problem) if you had a service manual. The bad news is that you bought a sony, which means it's probably some crappy chip made in taiwon that is a special order/rare item for every USA store/website in existance...

What I would do is check online for pin compatible chips with the one that's bad. then replace it with one that doesn't suck, like TI or philips. Most cheap parts are knock offs of good ones after all.

Could it be that the bulb is going. That would be a simple thing to check Before you started replacing chips
