some networking help needed.
ok i got vonage hooked up and working great. the problem comes with the computer that is hooked up to the vonage router. I can see the internet just fine but when I try to see other computers that are on a different router I cant. So I have my internet/routers setup like.
Cable modem to Linksys router. on the Linksys router I have my 360, my computer and wilds computer hooked to it. On the 4rth port I have the motorola router for my Vonage phone. From that router is where I goto my laptop. What I am trying to figure out is why I can get to the internet from the laptop but I cant see any of the computers on the linksys router. Is it because the IP address of the computer is slight different than the linksys routers ips? The laptops ip starts 192.168.15.XXX wheras the computers on the linksys start 192.168.1.XXX. Do I need to set the motorola (vonage) router to be the same as the linksys routers beginning ip range?

Yes. Because technically the sets of computer units on each respective router are receiving their IP addresses from a different gateway IP, which places them in a different physical network, and thus why you cannot see the other units from the Vonage router.
Internally, you should be messing with each router's LAN settings. What you need to keep in mind is to tweak each one's DHCP server settings so that your units don't automatically get assigned the same IP addresses, thus causing an IP address conflict on your network.
Here's what I mean:
Your linksys router's IP address will default to 192.168.1.1
It is setup to create a DHCP server for which all the units connected to it will automatically be assigned an IP address.
Usually Linksys routers will default to use the IP addresses in the range of 192.168.1.100 - 192.168.1.150
You should see that relatively close to the LAN address box on your initial configuration page.
Since I am not that familiar with your motorola unit, it may end up being easier to place the Linksys unit into the same gateway as the motorola unit, seeing as how you can dictate what IPs the Linksys will use for auto-assign purposes pretty easily. Although, because your motorola unit is physically plugged into the Linksys unit, it should just be a matter of changing it's DHCP server settings.
Anyway, what I'm getting at is that you want to make sure that your Motorola unit (or Linksys unit depending on which unit's settings will be easier to alter) is not going to want to use the same range of IP addresses when it comes to auto-assignment within your network. That will only cause more headaches.
The motorola unit should offer the same types of configuration as the Linksys unit does, I'm just not as familiar with them. Your call as to which you alter and which you leave the same.
But to recap, in a nutshell:
Either change the LAN IP of the Motorola unit to 192.168.1.XXX and make sure it doesn't auto-assign IPs to anything within the range of 192.168.1.100-150, OR change the LAN IP of the Linksys unit to 192.168.15.XXX and make sure it doesn't auto-assign IPs in the range of whatever the Moto unit is using. This will put both units inside the same gateway IP address, and allow each unit to speak to one another on the network, provided none of the units are trying to use an IP address that's already been assigned to something.
Good luck!

The ip address of the motorola is 192.168.1.103 assigned by my linksys router. however thats for the Wan. The lan settings has the motorola ip set at 192.168.15.1 and then assigns any computers connected as 192.168.15.xxx. I cant get it to assign the computers on that motorola to a different set of ip's (like to use range 192.168.1.10-99). It keeps defaulting back to 192.168.15.xxx. I also cant change the motorola's internal ip from 192.168.15.1 as it says mutli masks unable to change. I tried setting it to 192.168.1.3 but it wont let me.
i should say the ip's I am setting do not conflict with either router. the linksys is set to assign 192.168.1.100-149. Oh I just looked and should I changed the subnet masks to be different on each router?
I will try to get some screens later

Why have the computer connected to the Vonage box in the first place? I have a spare 8-port switch . . .

That won't fix his problem. It's a little more complicated than IP Addressing, there would need to be some configuration changes to the Motorola router to allow this to occur. Knowing the model of the Motorola would help solve the problem quicker. I run 3 routers and/or firewalls daisy chained on my home network and I have no problem from access devices on either side(depending on the computers security zone).
Like Smiley said, slap them on the 8-porter and behind the same router.

Any router should have a programable DHCP scope? Can't you set them both for the same scope?
Maybe I'm missing something here...I read this in a hurry.

Ah, well then you'll have to end up using a switch in there. Dropping it in like that would work in theory (done it before with other devices), but if the equipment won't let you, not much you can do.
Hope it works out.
