In 1973 the oil embargo caused a shortage of fuel, so not only did the cost of fuel skyrocket but you could only get 10 gallons at a time - if the station even had fuel. So it was not just the cost of fuel that killed many of the larger engined vehicle but the fact you could not get gas at all. The muscle cars went byebye

Everything that was transported by truck went up also. JAFW has it right, inflation will jump up the cost of everything.
I sold my '69 Chevelle SS 396 and bought a diesel Rabbit instead. I went from 10 to 53 mpg. But today I will just pay the fuel cost and continue driving my 9 mpg F350. I go thru 4 fufillups per month on average. Still cheaper than when I lived 40 minutes from work and put 8 fillups per month in that truck.
When the high powered cars out there start selling for cheap because of fuel cost I intend to get something sweet as a toy, like BadDawg's S10
